Reb Zalman left this world on July 3, 2014. He is greatly mourned by his followers, friends, and family..
|My Bio / Story||
Throughout his long career Reb Zalman has been an unending resource for the world religious community. He is the father of the Jewish Renewal and Spiritual Eldering movements, an active teacher of Hasidism and Jewish Mysticism, and a life-long leader in ecumenical dialogues throughout the world.
He received his rabbinic ordination from the Central Chabad Yeshivah in Brooklyn in 1947 and, at the direction of the 6th Lubivitcher Rebbe, started travelling to college campuses. Soon he was reaching out to leaders and practitioners of other spiritual paths, from Trappist monks to Sufi sheikhs. He became deeply learned in the theory and experiential practice of these traditions, praying matins with Catholic monks and performing zhikr with Sufi sheikhs. This led him to deep friendships with many of the world’s great spiritual teachers and visionaries, including Father Thomas Merton, Reverend Howard Thurman, Pir Vilayat Inayat-Khan, Ram Das, and the 14th Dalai Lama. He was initiated as a Sheikh in the Sufi Order of Hazrat Inayat Khan in 1975. His dialogue the Dalai Lama is documented in the best-selling book, The Jew in the Lotus.
A prolific writer, scholar and teacher, Reb Zalman is considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on Hasidism and Kabbalah. The many books he has authored and co-authored include Spiritual Intimacy: A Study of Counseling in Hasidism (1991), Paradigm Shift (1993), From Age-ing to Sage-ing (1995), Jewish with Feeling: Guide to a Meaningful Jewish Practice (2005), A Heart Afire: Stories and Teachings of the Early Hasidic Masters (2009), and A Hidden Light (2010).
Reb Zalman is Professor Emeritus at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he was Professor of Jewish Mysticism and Psychology of Religion from 1975 – 1987. He held the World Wisdom Chair at Naropa University, the only accredited Buddhist-inspired university in the Western hemisphere, from 1995 – 2004, serving as special guide and elder to the Naropa community and providing for the integration of world wisdom traditions with modern culture.
